This book presents a typical Victorian-era romance full of unexpected twists typical of Mary Elizabeth Brandon. It tells of a young girl making bad decisions and being tempted by a man. Clarissa is well brought up girl who cares for others and is swayed too much by them in matters of the heart. There were times when the heroine was making all the correct decisions, according to the norms of the time, but they were the wrong ones, which only led her to misery and nearly ruined.
