The characters of this tale are Mr. and Mrs. Grundy and their three daughters, Mrs. Grundy's cynical brother Dudley, and the author who appears as the friend of the family. The scenes are placed amid Loudon fashionable society at dinners, receptions, etc., the story being evolved by a series of conversations on all sorts of up-to-date subjects, that are witty and amusing.
