A gripping memoir written by a 96-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor about his escape from Nazi-occupied Poland in the 1930's and his adventures with the French Resistance during World War II A gripping memoir written by a 96-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor about his escape from Nazi-occupied Poland in the 1930's and his adventures with the French Resistance during World War II In 1937, as the Nazi Party tightened its grip on the city of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland), Justus Rosenberg’s parents made the wrenching decision to send their son to Paris, where he would have the hope of finishing high school and going on to university in safety. He was sixteen years old, and he would not see his family again for sixteen years more. Even after war broke out in 1939, life in France was peaceful for a time—but when the Nazis pushed toward Paris in the spring of 1940, Justus was forced to flee south to Toulouse. There, a chance meeting put Justus in contact with Varian Fry, the American journalist who ran a refugee network that aided several thousand Jews in escaping Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. With his German background, understanding of French cultural, and fluency in several languages, including English, Justus was ideally positioned to thrive in Fry’s network, coming to master an underworld of counterfeit documents, whispered passwords, black market currency, opportunistic gangsters, and clandestine mountain passes. Justus would spend the rest of the war working for Fry and later the French Resistance, helping to provide safe passage for many intellectuals and artists on the run from the Nazis, among them Hannah Arendt, Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, and Max Ernst. Along the way, he would have a number of close scrapes of his own: on one occasion, he was rounded up to be sent to a labor camp in Poland, and had to make a daring escape to save his life; on another, he narrowly survived after his jeep hits a landmine. An epic saga of survival, with the soul of a spy thriller, The Art of Resistance is also an uplifting story of personal triumph. (Several years after the war, Justus was finally able to track down his family, who he feared had died at the Nazis’ hands.) As Justus writes, “I survived the war through a rare combination of good fortune, resourcefulness, optimism, and, most important, the kindness of many good people.” ‘A natural raconteur, with a pleasing conversational style. What shines through this engaging book is his evident desire to be helpful and responsible and his acute consciousness of how extraordinarily lucky he was’ Times ‘Gripping … Fearless … Recalls imprisonments, escapes from confinement, and successful missions against the Nazis … A welcome addition to the World War II memoir shelf.’ Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review Justus Rosenberg was born in Gdańsk, Poland in 1921. When the Nazis rose to power, he moved to France, where he joined an extralegal French-American network that helped to bring anti-fascist intellectuals and artists from Vichy, France to the United States. He subsequently served with the French Resistance and then the United States Army. For his wartime service, Rosenberg received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. For the last 70 years, he has taught at American universities, and is currently a professor emeritus of languages and literature at Bard College. He is the cofounder of the Justus & Karin Rosenberg Foundation, which works to combat antisemitism. FIRST-HAND WORLD WAR II ACCOUNT: Following bestselling WWII memoirs by Donald Stratton, Dusty Kleiss, and Louis Zamperini, 96-year-old Justus Rosenberg delivers an extraordinary personal tale of his excape from Nazi-controlled Danzig to France, where he joined the French Resistance during the German occupation. Justus is the last living member of Varian Fry’s network, a final link to one of the most notable organizations from the war. HIGHLY PROMOTABLE AUTHOR: Today, Justus, despite his age, still teaches at Bard College, where his captivating lectures, and personal history, were the subject of a 2016 New York Times feature. He is still completely mobile, and in remarkably good shape, and will be a tremendous asset in promoting the book. JEWISH INTEREST ANGLE: Justus’s story also centers on the Jewish experience, both on the European continent during the war, and in America after it. FOUNDATION CONNECTIONS: Justus’s foundation, the Justus and Karin Rosenberg Foundation, has been combating anti-Semitism for over 25 years, and will be a major asset in publicizing Justus’s story. They’ve placed op-eds in the New York Times and CNN Online, among elsewhere, and have close connections to many individuals and groups who can help with book publicity, including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Southern Poverty Law Center. PHOTOS: Will feature never-before-seen photographs from Justus Rosenberg’s personal collection.
